The First Baptist Church of Fort Gibson, Indian Territory was organized on August 1, 1903. Rev. J.G. Brindal, Missionary to the Cherokees and Rev. J.M. Newman, District Missionary for the northern half of Indian Territory, attended this meeting with Rev. Brindal preaching the message.
There were 19 charter members, The J. Newton Brown Articles of Faith or any other standard manual accepted by the Missionary Baptist was adopted. The 50-foot lot where the original building stood was bought in March of 1904 with a three-room house on the lot.
The first Sunday School was organized on January 5, 1913. A decision was also made to adopt a budget of $293.75 with a pastor’s salary of $1.00. During the years between 1920 and 1928, teachers and ministries from Bacone College conducted the services with three gospel teams that rotated each week.
The first Sunday in January of 1946, just before Sunday school, the building caught fire and was a total loss. The membership met for a time in the local theater, the Presbyterian Church and the grade school auditorium.
With $5,000 borrowed money, $3,130 insurance money and $800 in donations the building was rebuilt. Over the years as God gave growth, other buildings were added. On February 1, 1970, the church met for the purpose of voting for a proposed new sanctuary. The new sanctuary was dedicated on March 14, 1971. On July 9, 1986 upon a recommendation of the Building and Grounds Committee, the church voted to build a new education building, and this building was completed on November 1, 1988 at a cost of $425,000.
For 100 + years God has truly blessed the body of believers at First Baptist Church Fort Gibson, Oklahoma. May God richly bless this church as we recommit ourselves to meeting the need of our community in the next 100 years and may everything we do be to GLORIFY GOD AND HIM ALONE.
